I'm ready for my close-up.

I have a bunch of old VHS home videos that I have been planning forever to transfer to DVD. I was reminded today to get off my ass and 'gitter dun'.

They are all from when the kids (the boy and his cousins) were little, so you can imagine they are living on borrowed time. I would really hate to lose them.

So, question to all A/V geeks out there. Anyone ever do it and if you did, what hardware/software do I need?

There are a couple ways you can do it.

The more complicated, but also more flexible way, is to use a vcr, some cables, and a decent computer with any video editing software. The computer needs to have video and audio inputs, as well as alot of free hard drive space.

The much simpler way to do it, is to purchase a VHS/DVD recorder combo that will do it for you. I know Yvette's dad picked up one for about $120. If you only have a few tapes, you might be better off paying Staples to do it. If you have 10-15 or more, you might want to check into picking up one of the combo units.

You know what? I have seen those DVD/VHS combo machines on sale and it never once dawned on me that the DVD was recordable.

Once again UberGeek comes through. Thanks

You're welcome

Not all of them have dvd recorders, so read the box before you buy. There are vhs/dvd combo's out there that are just players.

The unit Yvette's dad bought was made specifically for dubbing (transferring vhs to dvd). Put your old tape in, put a blank dvd in, follow the instruction sheet, walk away.
